RI Route 403 Railroad Bridge No. 1009
This $18M construction of the RI Route 403 Railroad Bridge No. 1009 in Kingston, RI was one phase of the relocated Route 403 project that allowed commuters easy access to the Quonset Point Development area. This interchange was one of the projects in which Turino's expertise was used to help secure the special Garvee Funds which allowed the overall project to be completed years earlier than originally projected.
The bridge itself was a single span structure consisting of steel plate girders on a concrete substructure. Although sounding straight forward, this structure was anything but. This structure, which passed over the AMTRAK Northeast corridor, was constructed on an extremely large skew angle. Due to the length of the single span, and the height clearance restrictions required by the railroad, this simple span structure was of enormous proportions.
Involved at the beginning of design, Turino worked in conjunction with the design team to ensure the constructability of all components of the structure, especially the erection of the structural steel superstructure. Turino was hired to monitor the construction schedule every two weeks and assist with any potential claims or delays that may arise. The project was completed on time so as to not impact the opening of the entire interchange.
